Just so you don’t think we’re total lushes here’s some of the other sights of Antwerp.

Statue and Cathedral

Antwerp is an easy train ride away from Amsterdam – just over an hour on the Thayllis. It boasts lots of attractions including spawning many well known fashion designers. And there are some price tags to prove it!

The new and the old

It’s a beautiful city and well worth the visit. It was the first time for both of us too so that was an added bonus.

Guild building

We bought a pamphlet from visitor information that had two self-guided historical walks on it. At 0.50e it was a total bargain and we got to discover things we would never have even known existed.

Statue of the Atwerp 'Hand'

The cathedral just off the Grote Markt in the centre of the oldest part of Antwerp is stunning. It’s so huge that it’s almost impossible to take a photo of without a mega-lense of some sort. It always astounds us to think buildings like this were built without cranes and other machinery. It’s amazing what people did before television!

Cathedral of the Blessed Lady - Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal

Antwerp is full of little hidden courtyards which we got to see a few of courtesy of our walking tour.

There is also a castle called Het Steen ( The Stone) which overlooks the river.

There are many sculptures and artworks all around the city.

Sculpture on the Cathedral steps

We loved this one. It was made by an iron worker who fell in love with the daughter of an artist. Apparently the artist didn’t want his daughter marrying a common tradesman so the iron worker became a painter. How times have changed!
