We have had some beautiful moments traveling around Holland in the last few week.

Last Tuesday Alex’s cousin Ilsa and her boyfriend Jeroen picked us up and took us on a drive through a very old, picturesque town called Grave.

We then had lunch at the place they work De Forel which is a trout and salmon trout (trout that are fed shrimp to make them pick on the inside) farm. People come there and fish and can keep what they catch. We didn’t fish but did get to take home a smoked trout – yum!

On Friday Alex’s uncle Ome Jan came and picked us up and took us to see his daughter Patricia’s art exhibition in Zwolle, another gorgeous place.

Patricia has been studying to be an art teacher and this was her graduation exhibition. It was held in a former church which is over 500 years old. There were some lovely pieces.

Patricia’s piece was a video installation about alter egos and decisions we make that shape our lives. It was very strong.

We then had dinner with Ome Jan, his wife Tante Willy and their son, Paul. We are being so spoiled.

We spent this weekend in the stunning city of Maastricht with Antoine (Alex’s cousin) and his partner Angelique.

We ate and drank a lot, but also walked the city extensively.

Candles in the church

The terraces

It is a fortified city and is just breath-taking.

Glorious architecture

The river Maas

We spent about half an hour in Helpoort and there was a tour guide who told us all about the history of the city.

We also drove to Belgium – about 15 minutes away! Unreal!

It’s just amazing how beautiful, old and close everything is. And how lucky we are to be here.
